제니퍼 로페즈(Jennifer Lopez)는 가수보다는 배우가 좀더 본업에 가까운 소위 만능엔터테이너로, TV와 영화를 통해 얻은 인기를 밑천으로 뮤직비즈니스에 진출한 케이스이다.

비록 30세 가까운 나이에 늦깎이로 데뷔하긴 했지만, 특유의 섹시한 몸매와 춤솜씨, 그리고 감각적인 음악을 결합시킨 결과 엄청난 상업적 성공을 거둘 수 있었다(때마침 불어닥친 라틴 팝의 열풍 또한 그녀의 성공에 크게 한몫을 했다).

1970년 뉴욕에서 푸에르토리코 출신 부모 사이에 태어난 로페즈는, 십대 후반부터 배우경력을 시작해 90년대 들어 TV시리즈를 중심으로 인기를 모으기 시작했다.

1995년 영화 ‘Money Train’을 통해 스크린에도 성공적으로 진출한 그녀는, 1997년 최고의 라틴 팝가수였던 셀레나(Selena)의 짧은 일생을 다룬 영화 ‘Selena’의 타이틀롤을 맡아 열연함으로써 그 재능을 유감없이 과시하게 된다.

그런 그녀의 가수데뷔는 1999년에 이루어졌다. 수많은 팬들의 기대속에 발매된 그녀의 데뷔앨범 [On The 6]는 어렵지 않게 플래티넘을 획득하는 한편, 넘버원 싱글 ‘If You Had My Love’를 배출해내기도 했다.

이즈음 그녀는 짧게 끝난 첫 결혼생활을 뒤로 하고 퍼프 대디(Puff Daddy)와 연인관계를 맺으며 매스컴의 주목을 받았다.

절정에 다다른 그녀의 인기는 2001년 발매된 2집 [J.Lo]에서도 그대로 이어지니, 앨범차트 정상을 밟은 이 앨범에서는 ‘Love Don't Cost A Thing’(3위), ‘I'm Real’(1위) 등의 싱글들이 히트대열에 오르며 ‘가수’ 로페즈의 입지가 더욱 굳어지게 된다. 이듬해에는 히트곡 리믹스 모음집인 [J To Tha L-O!]마저도 차트 1위에 오를 정도였다.

그사이 크리스 저드(Chris Judd)라는 인물과 결혼했다가 얼마 못가 헤어진 뒤 배우 벤 에플렉(Ben Affleck)을 새 연인으로 맞아들인 로페즈는, 2002년 싱글 ‘Jenny From The Block’을 앞세운 3집 [This Is Me... Then]을 발표해 또 한바탕 인기몰이를 하였다.

그리고 이듬해, 함께 영화 ‘저지 걸(Jersey Girl)’을 촬영하던 로페즈-에플렉 커플은 파경을 맞게 된다.

이후 두 사람의 결별원인을 둘러싼 온갖 루머가 난무하는 가운데, 2004년 6월 로페즈가 가수 마크 앤서니(Marc Anthony)와 비밀결혼식을 올렸다는 보도가 전해지며 팬들을 새삼스레 경악시키기도 했다.
