출생 : 1958년 8월 29일 미국 인디애나주 개리 / 데뷔 : The Jackson 맴버, 솔로전향 1971년 앨범 Got To There. 

1994년 엘비스 프레슬리의 딸 리사와 결혼.

 

80년대 팝의 황제로 등극해 여전히 자신의 입지를 지키고 있는 Michael Jackson(본명: Michael Joseph Jackson)은 1958년 8월 29일 미국 인디애나 州 Gary에서 태어났다.

그는 총 9남매 중 막내로 태어났으며, 그의 아버지 Joe Jackson은 The Falcons라는 무명 로컬 밴드에서 기타리스트로 활동했으며, 어머니 Catherine Jackson은 클라리넷을 연주했다.

MIchael Jackson은 물론 Jackson 家의 다섯형제로 결성된 The Jackson 5도 아버지 Joe에 의해 결성된 것으로, 이들의 아버지는 자신이 이루지 못한 꿈을 대신하기 위해 어릴 때부터 자식들을 음악인으로 키우기 위해 혹독을 훈련을 시켰다.

모타운(Motown) 레코드사에서 활동하던 The Jackson 5에서 가장 재능 많은 소년으로 인정 받은 MIchael Jackson은 71년 첫 솔로 앨범 [Got to Be There]을 발표할 수 있었다.

이 앨범에서 71년 'Got to Be There'가 1위를 기록하며 히트했고, 뒤이어 같은 앨범의 수록곡 'Rockin' Robin'과 'Ben'이 72년 히트를 기록하는 행운을 누리게 된다.

그러나 70년대 초 Jackson과 The Jackson 5의 운도 서서히 쇠퇴해 갔다.

그리하여 이들은 70년대 중반 모타운과의 계약을 해지하고 에픽(Epic) 레코드와 계약을 체결하며, Michael은 자신의 솔로 활동을 단념하고 The Jacksons로 개명한 자신의 형제 그룹에만 충실하게 된다.

이러한 노력으로 The Jacksons는 다시 예전의 인기를 회복하게 되며, Michael Jackson은 79년 당시 최고의 프로듀서 Quincy Jones를 만나게 되면서 솔로로서 앨범 [Off the Wall]을 발표하게 된다.

Quincy Jones 후원으로 이 앨범에는 David Foster, Stevie Wonder, Patti Austin 등과 같은 최고의 뮤지션들이 참여해 앨범의 완성도를 한층 높여 줬다.

그리고 맑은 음성을 소유한 소년에서 변성기를 거친 청년으로 성장한 Michael Jackson은 이 앨범을 통해 'Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough'와 같은 댄스곡과 감성적인 발라드 'She's Out of My Life'와 같은 곡으로 변화된 모습을 보여줬다.

그리고 이 앨범은 이전의 솔로 시절이나 The Jackson 5 시절보다 더욱 많은 앨범 판매고를 기록, 차트 10위 권내에 4곡을 진입시키기도 했다.

그러나 Michael Jackson은 형제들을 저버리지 않고 다시 The Jacksons와 함께 앨범을 레코딩했으며, 공연했다.

그리고 82년 그의 최대 히트작이자 역사적인 앨범 [Thriller]를 발표한다.

이 앨범은 2000년이 되기 전까지만 해도 그래미 어워드의 최다 부문 수상작이었다.

물론 2000년 그래미 어워드에서 Santana가 역시 8개 부문을 수상했음으로 아직 동등한 기록을 지니고 있다고 할 수 있으나, 실질적으로 Santana가 9개 부문을 수상한 것과 다름없기 때문에 Michael Jackson으로서는 다소 아쉬운 마음이 들 법하다.

아무려나 [Thriller]는 역사적인 앨범이라는 수식어가 무색하지 않을 만큼 미국 내에서만도 2천만 장의 판매고를 기록했으며, 앨벌 수록곡 9 곡 중 무려 7 곡이 차트 10위 권내에 진입하는 기록을 낳기도 했다.

말할 것도 없이 Michael Jackson은 더 이상 형제들의 도움이 필요없을 만큼 팝계의 제왕으로 떠올랐으나 그는 84년 자신의 형제들과 함께 앨범을 발표하고 또 투어를 계속해 나갔다.

연이어 85년 그는 Lionel Richie와 공동으로 작곡한 'We Aer The World'로, 아프리카 난민을 돕기 위한 모금 앨범인 [USA For Africa]에 참여하기도 했으며, 87년에는 새로운 솔로 앨범 [Bad]를 발표, 'J Just Can't Stop Loving You', 'Bad', 'The Way You Make Me Heel'과 같은 곡을 히트시키며, 미국 내에서 6백만 장의 판매고를 기록, 5곡을 차트 1위로 올려 놓기도 했다.

이 앨범을 통해 Michael Jackson은 거장 Martin Scorsese와 함께 17분에 이르는 뮤직 비디오를 제작해 이목을 끌었으며, 88년에는 자서전 'Moonwalk'를 발간했다가 자신의 아버지로부터 고소를 당하기도 했다.

91년 뉴 잭 스윙(New Jack Swing)의 창시자 Teddy Riley가 프로듀싱한 앨범 [Dangerous]로 다시 돌아온 Michael Jackson은 'Black And White', 'Remember The Time', 'In The Closet', 'Jam'을 히트시키며 4백만 장의 판매고를 기록한다.

특히 'Black Or White'는 120만 달러를 투자해 뮤직 비디오로 제작돼 화제를 낳았으며, 그는 MTV로부터 'King Of Pop'이라는 칭호를 받기도 한다.

이 앨범의 성공에 힘입어 Michael Jackson은 92년 7월 유럽을 시작으로 93년까지 계속되는 두번째 세계 투어를 갖게 됐으며, 94년 가을에는 Elvis Presley의 딸 Lisa와 결혼한다.

그러나 인기가 따르면 그 만큼의 루머(사실이든 아니든)가 따르듯 Michael Jackson은 성추행범으로 고소를 당하는 고역을 치뤄냈으며, 95년 원기회복하여 솔로 더블 앨범 [History]를 발표했다.

이 앨범에는 이미 발표했던 히트곡 15곡과 신곡 15곡이 수록됐으며, 여동생 Janet Jackson과 함께 한 뮤직 비디오에 4백만 달러를 투자하기도 했다.
